The PLU (price look-up) stickers on produce aren’t just to annoy you. The numbers can be helpful in identifying the fruit or vegetable. How? Produce which have 5-digit codes that begin in a 9 are organic and those that begin with an 8 are genetically modified.

Organic produce can get expensive so what is a fixed-budget to do? According to Food News, here are the top 12 veggies and fruits that contain the highest levels of pesticide when grown conventionally. So if you can’t go ALL organic, consider buying the following foods organically:

  2. Celery
  3. Sweet Bell Peppers
  4. Peaches
  5. Strawberries
  6. Nectarines, imported
  7. Grapes
  8. Spinach
  9. Lettuce
  10. Cucumbers
  11. Blueberries – domestic
  12. Potatoes
